A handful of groups offering social and community connections in central Winnipeg can expand their work thanks to provincial funding announced Wednesday.“We want to make sure that everyone has a place where they can feel safe and comfortable and have opportunities to grow,†said Housing and Community Development Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross of the $148,000 in funding through the province’s Neighbourhoods Alive! program. “Neighbourhoods Alive! brings people together, it celebrates diversity and provides opportunities for all.â€
The funding will see Artbeat Studio get $35,000 for neighbourhood art activities, the Central Neighbourhoods Development Corporation receive nearly $39,000 for safety-related program, Frame Projects get just over $20,000 and Mosaic Newcomer Family Resource Network get just over $31,000 for parenting classes.
The University of Winnipeg’s Wii Chiiwaakanak Learning Centre will also receive $12,500 for after-school recreation programming and the Central Neighbourhoods Renewal Initiative get $10,000 for capacity building.
“These local groups are enhancing quality of life and helping build a strong sense of community,†said Irvin-Ross, in a release. “By working together with community partners we are building, supporting and revitalizing neighbourhoods.â€
